What is the purpose of flash intro and sounds to web sites?

Few years ago, it was really impressive when a web page  had a flash video as an intro. Today, it is more than annoying when a visitor is one step behind the actual web page. The worst thing is when you enter into the super-duper web site and is sound enabled. You have to find very quickly where is mute button around the web site in order to avoid the disturbance.  The world change, so the requirements… Keep it simple is the new trend.
